Pythium Disease of Fibrous-rooted Begonia and Its Control 1

A serious crown and stem disease of fibrous-rooted begonia {Begonia semperflorens Link and Otto) plants, variety Fire Sea, was observed in out-of-door plantings at Berkeley, Calif., in July 1937. During the following winter, a similar disease was found on Carmine, Christmas Cheer, and Primadonna fibrous-rooted begonia plants in a greenhouse at Columbia, Mo. A preliminary report on this disease has already been published (4)^; this paper presents more complete results of a joint investigation of this disease.
